AUTO1 Group Price Index – The European Used Car Price Report

The AUTO1 Group Price Index shows the monthly evolution of used car prices across Europe. By analyzing AUTO1 Group’s database of around 3.6 million used car transactions Europe-wide, we have developed a pioneering index to improve data transparency in the used car market and give insights into the wholesale price trend of used vehicles bought by dealers on our platform. It measures the month-to-month price evolution to monitor trend lines and help our partners define how they’re standing against these developments to be able to adapt quickly and according to market trends.

The AUTO1 Group Price Index is published on a monthly basis and is the first of its kind to be published at a European level based on actual sales and transaction prices of wholesale used cars since 2015. It leverages on our deep knowledge and in-house business intelligence on our immense database to provide market insights and trends. Different departments in the company, including the Communications, Management, Business Analytics (BA), and Design teams, have been working together on this project, establishing a benchmark in the European industry for pricing insights.

“As a new member of the company and the BA team, this project was an opportunity to interact with different people and become familiar with our data. There were two main challenges. The first was developing the methodology to include all key data points to give transparent insights. The second was merging the robust and meaningful model with the communication strategy. I particularly appreciated the trust, help, and feedback between the different teams,” shares Boris Terzic, Business Analyst, who led the data analysis section of the project.

The AUTO1 Group Price Index is based on our wholesale data, starting from January 2015. It follows a standardized methodology that considers transaction data of all AUTO1 Group markets and assesses different parameters such as vehicle classes, fuel type, age and mileage ranges to ensure that the vehicles of the data set are representative of the European used car market. As it is a dynamic market and our goal is to show monthly developments, the AUTO1 Group Price Index shouldn’t be considered predictive.
